How to score rodeo events? ›

In Rough Stock events, athletes ride bucking horses or bulls in the bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding in efforts to receive the highest score. Scores come half from the animal (50 points possible) and half from the rider (50 points possible) for a total possible score of 100 points.

What does DG mean in rodeo scoring? ›

Double Grab – During roughstock events, if a contestant touches his animal, self or equipment during the eight second ride with his free hand, he is disqualified.

The rider only scores points if he successfully rides the bull for eight seconds. The bull is always given a score. Four judges award a score of up to 25 points each for the rider's performance, and four judges award up to 25 points each for the bull's effort.

Just as in the other roughstock events, there are two judges watching each ride. Both judges are watching the rider and the bull, scoring them on their performance. Judges score the rider from 0-25 and the bull 0-25; the four judged scores are added together with a total maximum score of 100 points.

The rider must stay on the horse for eight seconds to be considered a successful ride. Each successful ride is then judged for a maximum score of 100 points. The more difficult the horse is to ride and the more control the contestant has during the ride, the higher the score.

Two judges are in the arena and score the rider and the horse on a scale of 1-25. Their scores are added together for a possible 100 points. When it all comes together it is a demonstration of timing between horse and rider with the rider's feet moving in rhythm with the animal. A good score is over 80.
